athenahealth’s Fall 2026 Tri-Annual Release is almost here, and there’s a lot for practices to be excited about.
The Fall 2026 release will begin rolling out for general availability from November 18–20. A select group of features will become available for testing in Preview beginning November 8, giving practices an early opportunity to explore upcoming changes.
While the release includes enhancements across athenaOne, several standouts have the potential to make a meaningful difference in clinicians’ and staff members’ daily work.
Ambient documentation takes center stage
One of the biggest highlights is athenaAmbient, which is included with athenaOne at no additional cost. athenaAmbient uses ambient listening and generative AI to create encounter notes and structured diagnoses for clinician review before sign-off. Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) in family medicine and internal medicine will be automatically activated, but providers in other specialties can opt in to beta testing.
Any practice using athenaAmbient should review their internal protocols for obtaining consent from everyone who will be recorded. For organizations exploring ways to reduce documentation burden while keeping clinicians in control of the final record, this is an especially exciting addition.
Less clicking, more getting things done
Several Fall 2026 enhancements focus squarely on efficiency.
The new Clinical Inbox Bulk Actions menu allows users to close, delete, or reassign multiple eligible documents at once rather than managing them individually. This capability is granted through the “Clinicals: Delete Document” user permission and “Clinicals Deletion” user role. All practices should review the application of user permissions and roles and consider a scheduled report to track Delete actions to ensure Bulk Deletion is not abused.
The Front Office Work Hub brings appointment information together with insurance, eligibility, Self Check-In readiness, visit status, and check-in and checkout actions. Enhanced navigation and filtering are also coming to the Correspondence Dashboard and Unpostables Dashboard, helping staff review and resolve records more efficiently.
And within the ordering workflow, a new Authorization Information card and Manage Authorization side panel allow users to view and edit authorizations without leaving the context of the order.
The new Population Intelligence tools are particularly relevant as the healthcare landscape continues to evolve. The ability to bring external data into athenaOne patient-chart workflows to support population health management and Value-Based Care will benefit not just individual practices, but the broader healthcare system through improved transparency, identification and connectivity of care.
Greater control over clinical workflows
Practices will gain more flexibility to configure athenaOne around their own workflows.
Organizations can create approved order lists and assign providers to those lists, helping filter and limit the orders individual providers can place.
New configuration options also give practices greater control over the diagnosis gap experience, including which diagnosis gap sources are used.
The release expands privacy controls as well. Practices can define rules restricting confidential encounters to authorized users and automatically hide selected encounter exam notes from patients, families, and health data exchanges.
Smarter approaches to denied A/R
Revenue cycle teams also have noteworthy enhancements coming their way.
Denials Configuration will support automated write-off of aged, denied accounts receivable using defined criteria and practice-specified transaction codes. Practices can also establish custom automated write-off rules for denied claims using additional conditions and designated transaction codes.
These capabilities give organizations more options for applying consistent, practice-defined rules to denied A/R.
A release worth exploring
What makes the Fall 2026 Tri-Annual Release especially compelling is the breadth of improvements. From AI-assisted documentation and streamlined front-office workflows to authorization management, denials automation, privacy controls, and clinical configuration, the release addresses work happening across the practice.
With Preview beginning November 8 for select features and general availability rolling out November 18–20, now is the time to identify the changes most relevant to your organization, prepare your teams, and take advantage of what’s coming.
